I tested dozens of free SEO AI tools in 2026
Free SEO AI tools often stop after a few searches or hide the good features behind a paid plan. See what each free plan includes and where the limits are.

Free SEO AI tools can seem appealing until you actually try to use them. Some give you a handful of searches, some keep the useful features behind a paid plan, and others offer AI output without the SEO data needed to make that output reliable.
For this article, I went through the free plans and free versions of the SEO and AI tools that came up most often in 2026, checking what each one actually includes, where the limits appear, and whether the AI features are genuinely part of the free offer. I also separated permanent free access from short trials, because those are not the same thing.
What follows is not a list of every tool I found. It is the shorter list that still made sense after checking the limits, use cases, and trade-offs, from search performance and technical SEO to content work and AI visibility.
Testing Criteria for Free SEO AI Tools
We looked at what each free plan includes, what its limits are, and whether the AI features are really free.
What we did
We read each tool's own pricing page, free-plan page, or help documentation in the first week of October 2026. If an official page failed to load or provide sufficient information, we used 2026 pricing guides and reviews, and we say so in the section for that tool. Claude and ChatGPT are general assistants, so we looked at what their free plans let you do for SEO work, not at any built-in SEO features.
The five questions we asked every tool
What does the free plan actually do?
Where is the cap?
Is the AI part inside the free plan or sold separately?
What does the next step cost?
Who is it really for?
What counted as free
No card, no time limit. A 7-day or 15-day trial is a trial, not a free plan. We kept those two things apart all the way through.
What this does not measure
Hands-on use. This is a review of what each tool's own pages and documentation say, not a lab test of each product.
How good the AI output is. We did not benchmark writing quality or how accurate any AI visibility score is.
Performance on a big site. Caps look different at 50 pages and at 50,000.
Long-term reliability. This is a snapshot of October 2026.
Future plan changes. Pricing and free limits move fast, and several tools below changed in the last year.
Quick Glance
Free, with AI-era features included

ChatGPT: OpenAI's AI assistant. Its free plan gives unlimited everyday text chats, with separate limits on files, data analysis, and images.
Free to start, but check what the free plan leaves out
Screaming Frog SEO Spider: A desktop crawler that is free up to 500 URLs.
Semrush free plan: A small daily allowance of reports from one of the big all-in-one suites.
Rank Math: A free WordPress SEO plugin, with its AI offered as a trial and then a paid plan.

Best free SEO AI tools
Each tool below gets the same short breakdown: what the free plan includes, where the limits are, what the next step costs, and who it suits. Skip to the ones that match the job in front of you.
1. Google Search Console
The free dashboard Google gives every site owner. It shows how your pages perform in Google Search, and it is the one SEO tool where the numbers come straight from the source. Google Search Console has also been busy. Google's own Search Central blog lists a string of new reports over the past year.
Features:
Search performance reporting, with a branded queries filter and custom chart annotations added in November 2025
Weekly and monthly views, added in December 2025
An AI-powered configuration for analyzing performance data, announced in December 2025
Search Generative AI performance reports, announced in June 2026
Web multimodal Search performance reporting, announced in September 2026
Reporting on social and video platform content, announced in July 2026
Limitations:
It only works for sites you own and verify.
Ahrefs, in its comparison, says Search Console shows the top 1,000 keywords and links and flags only a handful of issues. Treat that as a competitor's view, but it reflects the experience of running into limits on bigger sites.
We could read the titles of the new AI reports on Google's blog, but not the full posts, so check what each one covers before you promise anyone a dashboard.
Pricing:
Free
Best for: anyone with a site who wants the ground truth on search performance before paying for anything else.
2. Bing Webmaster Tools

Microsoft's free counterpart to Search Console. On February 10, 2026, Microsoft added an AI Performance report in public preview. It shows how often Copilot and Bing's AI summaries cite your content in their answers. It is the only first-party report on AI citations from a search engine that we found, and it costs nothing. Bing Webmaster Tools needs a verified site.
Features:
Total citations, cited pages and "grounding queries," the phrases the AI used to find your content
Coverage of Copilot, Bing AI summaries and select partner integrations
Free for any verified site
Page-level activity: citation counts for specific URLs on your site, with visibility trends over time
Built to respect the content owner preferences you set in robots.txt and other supported controls, according to Microsoft
Limitations:
It counts citations only. Semrush's write-up points out it does not measure clicks, rankings or traffic from AI answers.
Copilot and Bing serve fewer people than Google and ChatGPT, so it shows a narrow slice of AI search. It does not report ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews.
Microsoft says the data is a sample of overall citation activity.
Still labelled as a public preview.
Pricing:
Free
Best for: publishers and site owners who want real, first-party data on whether AI answers cite their pages.
3. Ahrefs Free
Ahrefs has renamed its free product. What used to be Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is now Ahrefs Free, and it gives you three tools for websites you verify: Web Analytics, Site Audit and Site Explorer. On top of that, Ahrefs offers a separate free AI Visibility Checker that needs no signup.
Features:
Site Audit scans for more than 170 technical and on-page issues
Site Explorer shows which pages and keywords bring organic traffic, and who links to you
Web Analytics is cookie-light and includes traffic from LLMs in its history graphs
AI Content Helper, with one free document a month
The AI Visibility Checker queries ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, then reports total mentions, mentions by platform, top topics, top cited domains and top cited pages
Limitations:
Free works on sites you verify, not on competitors.
Site Audit gives 5,000 crawl credits a month per project.
Site Explorer shows up to 1,000 backlinks and 1,000 keywords at once.
The free AI Visibility Checker shows only the top five results in each section. Full tracking is a paid product called Brand Radar.
Pricing:
Ahrefs Free: $0
Starter plan: from €27/month
Brand Radar: from $199/month for selected platforms, $699/month for all platforms
Best for: site owners who want serious technical and backlink data without a subscription.
4. HubSpot AI Search Grader
A free, one-time check of what AI models say about your brand. HubSpot's AI Search Grader needs no account to run. You enter a brand, location, product and industry, and it asks ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini how they describe you.
Features:
A score out of 100 across five areas: sentiment (up to 40 points), presence quality (20), brand recognition (20), share of voice (10) and market position (10)
A written explanation of the result
Works on competitor brands too
Limitations:
It is a snapshot, not tracking. HubSpot says it reflects what the models say based on their training data.
HubSpot's own disclaimer states that an AI tool generates the recommendations, that a human has not reviewed them, and that results are not guaranteed.
The full report comes after you complete a short form.
Pricing:
Free for the one-time check
HubSpot AEO, the ongoing monitoring product, is listed at $50/month
Best for: marketers who want a quick, no-account first look at how AI describes a brand.
5. Claude
Claude is one of several AI assistants rather than an SEO tool, so there is no keyword database or rank tracker behind it. What the free plan does give you is a capable writing and analysis partner. The free plan includes chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation, code execution, memory across conversations, connected apps, Artifacts and up to five projects.
Features:
Web search, so it can pull in current pages when you ask about a topic
File analysis and code execution, which is how you would have it read a keyword export or a crawl report
Projects, up to five on the free plan, for keeping one site's notes and files together
Memory across conversations and connected apps, according to the pricing page
Drafting jobs that SEO work needs: content briefs, title and meta description options, FAQ drafts, internal link ideas
Limitations:
The pricing page lists chat, search, files and code. It does not list a keyword, backlink or ranking database, so any numbers you want have to come from another tool.
Usage is a shared allowance. One 2026 guide, updated in September 2026, says it resets every five hours rather than giving a fixed message count, and that web search, code and file work all draw from that same allowance. We were unable to access Anthropic's help page for this topic, so please consider the details as per that guide's reading.
It does not report whether AI answers mention your brand. For that, use the checkers above.
Pricing:
Free: $0
Pro: $20/month, or $17/month billed annually ($200 upfront)
Max: from $100/month
Best for: turning data you already have into briefs, drafts and summaries, without paying for another subscription.
6. ChatGPT
ChatGPT is also a general assistant rather than an SEO platform. OpenAI's free tier FAQ says free users can search the web, analyse data, upload images or files, create images, use GPTs, and keep a library with 500 MB of storage.
Features:
Unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards, according to OpenAI
Web search for up-to-date information
Data analysis and file uploads, which cover reading an exported keyword or traffic sheet
GPTs, ready-made assistants you can pick up and use
Image creation and a library with 500 MB of storage
Limitations:
Everything beyond text chat has its cap. OpenAI says file uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis and other tools have separate usage limits, and it gives no numbers. ChatGPT tells you when you hit one.
Like Claude, it has no keyword, backlink or ranking data of its own, and it does not audit your site.
Pricing:
Free: $0
Go: $8/month, Plus: $20/month, Pro: $100 or $200/month, according to an October 2026 pricing guide. OpenAI's own pricing page showed blank prices when we read it.
Best for: quick drafting, summarising and spreadsheet-style analysis when you want a free starting point.
7. Screaming Frog SEO Spider
A desktop crawler that visits your pages the way a search engine would. The free version of Screaming Frog crawls up to 500 URLs, which is plenty for a small site.
Features:
Finds broken links, errors and redirects
Checks page titles and meta data
Spots exact duplicate pages
Generates XML sitemaps
Creates site visualisations
Audits hreflang attributes
Lists a feature called "Crawl with OpenAI & Gemini"
Limitations:
The pricing page lists the OpenAI and Gemini feature, but the text we could read does not show whether the free version includes it.
It is a desktop app, so there is a download and a learning curve.
Pricing:
Free: up to 500 URLs
Paid licence: $279 per year, with the crawl limit lifted (the real ceiling depends on your computer's memory)
Best for: technical SEOs and owners of small sites who want a proper crawl without paying.
8. Semrush free plan
Semrush is one of the big all-in-one SEO suites, and its free plan works more like a demo. Semrush's own knowledge base says free accounts get 10 total requests a day across its reports. Review sites add that the free plan covers one project and 10 tracked keywords. According to the pricing on Semrush, it would not load for us (it showed a bot check), so the plan details below come from its knowledge base and 2026 reviews.
Features:
Access to keyword and domain research, within the daily cap
One project
A 7-day free trial of paid plans, which needs a card (according to 2026 pricing guides)
Limitations:
Ten requests disappear fast. A keyword search, a difficulty check and a competitor lookup is three already.
AI on the free plan is unclear. One 2026 guide says the free plan has no AI features. Another says the pricing page lists some AI visibility features.
Pricing:
Free plan: $0
Paid plans: guides we read list the classic Pro plan from $139.95/month
Best for: getting a feel for the interface and running a few quick checks, not for real research.
9. Rank Math
A WordPress SEO plugin with a free version that you can install straight away. Its AI is a different story. Rank Math offers "Rank Math AI" as a 15-day free trial, and its FAQ says that when the trial ends you are charged for the corresponding plan unless you cancel.
Features:
A free plugin you can try before buying
A 15-day Rank Math AI trial that, per the pricing page, covers creating SEO content, building internal links and tracking AI visibility
Analytics data pulled from your Google Search Console and Analytics accounts
Limitations:
The AI is a trial, not a free plan.
Analytics data refreshes every seven days on the free plan and every three days on paid plans, according to its FAQ.
WordPress only.
Pricing:
Plugin: free
PRO: €7.99/month billed annually, renewing at €8.99/month
Best for: WordPress owners who want a free plugin now and will decide on AI later.
10. Yoast SEO
Yoast SEO is a long-running WordPress SEO plugin. In an announcement dated July 2025, Yoast said the free plugin includes its new llms.txt feature, while Premium includes unlimited use of its AI features (still in beta) for titles, meta descriptions and more.
Features:
Free plugin with llms.txt support
Premium adds real-time content analysis, a redirect manager and an internal linking tool
Premium includes unlimited use of its AI features (still in beta) for titles, meta descriptions and more
Premium also folds in the old Local, News and Video add-ons
Limitations:
The AI is a Premium feature, not part of the free plugin.
Our source is a July 2025 announcement, so prices and bundles may have changed.
WordPress only.
Pricing:
Plugin: free
Premium: $118.80 per year before VAT, per the July 2025 announcement
Best for: WordPress owners who like guided, step-by-step content checks and are fine paying later for the AI.

Choosing the Right Starting Point
The right pick depends on the job in front of you. Match the tool to your goal, and start with the one that fits.
You want the truth about your search traffic: Start with Google Search Console, where the numbers come straight from Google. Then add Bing Webmaster Tools, which also reports when Copilot cites your pages.
You want a technical audit and backlink data for your site: Ahrefs Free. It covers Site Audit, Site Explorer and Web Analytics, with monthly limits that matter more as your site grows.
You want to know if AI mentions your brand: Run the Ahrefs AI Visibility Checker and the HubSpot grader, then compare. They ask different questions, so look for patterns in both, not matching numbers. Repeat next month.
You want help with briefs, meta descriptions or reading an exported sheet: Claude or ChatGPT on the free plan. Neither holds SEO data, so feed them numbers from the tools above and review the output. Usage caps apply.
You have a small site and want to crawl it: Screaming Frog. It is free for small crawls and finds broken links, redirects and duplicate pages.
You run WordPress: Rank Math or Yoast. Both install free, but AI is a 15-day trial in Rank Math and a Premium feature in Yoast. Decide on AI later.
You want a big research suite: Treat the Semrush free plan as a demo. The daily cap runs out fast. If you are serious, look at its paid trial.
Limitations of Free SEO AI Tools
Free tools are useful, but their limits are easy to miss. These are the limitations to consider before you build a workflow around them.
The scores will not match. HubSpot's grader reflects what the models say based on their training data. Ahrefs' checker queries AI platforms with prompts based on real searches. Bing counts citations in Copilot. Three tools, three different questions. Do not average them.
Most of them measure and do not fix. Free dashboards tell you what is happening. They rarely do the work.
Free usually means your own site. Search Console, Bing and Ahrefs Free all lean on sites you verify. Competitor research is where the paywalls start.
Plans keep moving. Ahrefs renamed its free product. Yoast reshuffled its plans in July 2025. Google keeps adding reports. A number in this article can age in a month.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Which free SEO AI tools are actually free?
Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and Ahrefs Free are free for good on sites you verify. HubSpot's grader and Ahrefs' AI Visibility Checker need no account. Screaming Frog and Semrush are free within caps, and Claude and ChatGPT have free plans with usage limits. Rank Math and Yoast install free, but their AI is a trial or a Premium upgrade.
Can Claude or ChatGPT replace a dedicated SEO tool?
No. Neither lists a keyword, backlink or ranking database on its free plan. They are useful for briefs, title and meta description options and summaries of data you already have, so pair them with the tools above and check their output.
Can free tools replace paid ones like Semrush or Ahrefs?
For your site, free tools often cover the basics. Ahrefs Free, Search Console and Bing already cover audits, keywords, backlinks and search performance. What you give up is competitor research and volume. Semrush's free plan is too small to replace anything.
How do I check if AI search mentions my brand for free?
Run the Ahrefs AI Visibility Checker and the HubSpot AI Search Grader, then add Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report for real Copilot citations. The three measure different things, so treat each as a snapshot and repeat the check every month or so.
Is using AI for SEO against Google's rules?
Not by itself. Google's spam policies, last updated on August 28, 2026, target "scaled content abuse": generating many pages mainly to manipulate rankings, however they are made. That includes using generative AI tools to produce many pages without adding value for users. One page that genuinely helps a reader is a different thing from a thousand thin ones.
Do I need WordPress to use these tools?
No. Only Rank Math and Yoast are WordPress plugins. The other eight work without it.
Conclusion
Free SEO AI tools are only worth using once you know where the free part ends. After checking the limits, the ones that held up fit four jobs: Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools for search performance, Ahrefs Free and Screaming Frog for technical SEO, Claude and ChatGPT for content work, and Bing, Ahrefs and HubSpot for AI visibility. Rank Math, Yoast and Semrush's free plan are worth a look once their caps are clear. Select the tool that best fits your current task, and conduct another AI visibility check next month.
Before making any payment, please open the pricing page and check the cap. Once you know which tool fits, the next step is knowing what to ask it, and ready-made marketing prompts, a quick way to start.
WebTechOS accepts no payment for coverage, placement or scores. Where a piece references pricing, it reflects published list rates at the date shown.
