Discord pricing 2026: Free vs Nitro Basic
Discord Free, Nitro Basic or Nitro? A plain 2026 comparison of prices, upload limits and perks, so you can pick a plan without overpaying.

Discord costs nothing to join, and plenty of people never pay for it. Chat, voice calls and servers all work on the free plan. The upgrade prompts start when you run into a limit, like a file that is too big to send or a custom emoji you cannot use outside its server. That is where Nitro Basic and full Nitro come in. Discord's own pages do not show prices for everyone, so the prices in this guide come from third-party pricing sites.
This guide sets Discord Free and Nitro Basic side by side, with full Nitro included as the yardstick. We cover what each plan includes, how the upload limits compare (20 MB on Free, 50 MB on Basic, up to 1 GB on Nitro), and which perks Basic leaves out, such as HD streaming, server boosts, and profile customization. We also work out what the $7 monthly gap adds up to over a year.
Before you subscribe, confirm your price in the Nitro tab of your settings.
Quick glance: the three plans
Plan | Price (billed monthly) | Price (billed yearly) | Who it actually fits |
|---|---|---|---|
Discord Free | $0 | $0 | People who mostly chat, join voice channels and share small files (20 MB uploads) |
Nitro Basic | $2.99/month | $29.99/year (third-party figure) | People who hit the upload limit (50 MB) or want custom emoji and stickers in every server |
Nitro | $9.99/month | $99.99/year (third-party figure) | Streamers and heavy users who want HD streaming, server Boosts, profile customization and 1 GB uploads |
Monthly prices are the standard US price. Yearly prices are not published on the Discord pages we read, so they come from third-party sites. Your price can differ by country, so check the Nitro tab before you pay.
Discord Free
What it is: The plan everyone starts on. Chatting, calling and joining servers cost nothing. The paid plans exist to unlock extras on top.
Features:
Text chat, voice and servers at no cost
Uploads up to 20 MB
Nitro Basic and Nitro are optional upgrades, not requirements
Limitations:
Custom emoji and stickers from other servers stay locked
No custom video backgrounds, no custom app icons
Free file limit has moved around: it rose from 10 MB to 20 MB in August 2026, and Discord says it is still experimenting with limits, so some accounts may see different numbers
Pricing:
$0
Best for: Anyone who mostly chats, joins voice channels and shares small files.
Nitro Basic
What it is: The entry-level paid plan. Discord describes it as a selection of the most-loved Nitro perks, and that is a fair summary.
Features:
Custom emoji and stickers from any server, wherever you have permission to use them
Super Reactions
Uploads up to 50 MB
Custom video backgrounds
Custom app icons
A Nitro Basic badge on your profile
Limitations:
Most of the perks are convenience and style, not new capabilities
Emoji and sticker use still depends on each server's permissions
No server Boosts, HD streaming, animated avatar, banner or profile theme
No per-server profiles, no longer messages, no Nitro Rewards
Pricing:
$2.99/month on the standard US price
$29.99/year on yearly billing
Discord says yearly billing exists, but the Discord pages we read do not publish the yearly price
These prices come from third-party websites, not from Discord: CostBench, G2A News, eesel.ai etc.
Best for: People who keep running into the upload limit or who are tired of seeing other servers' emoji they cannot use.
Nitro (the yardstick)
What it is: The full plan. Everything in Basic, plus the perks that cost Discord more to run or that mostly matter to heavy users.
Features:
Uploads up to 1 GB
HD streaming and screen sharing
2 server Boosts, plus 30% off extra Boosts
Animated avatar, banner image and profile theme
Per-server profiles
Messages up to 4,000 characters
Join up to 200 servers
Color themes, Display Name Styles and soundboard sounds anywhere
Nitro Rewards: Xbox Game Pass (Starter Edition) in select regions, monthly gear discounts and monthly Orbs
Limitations:
The 2 Boosts are not permanent and do not stack. They last only while your subscription is active.
Some perks, like Xbox Game Pass, depend on your region and come with eligibility rules
Lots of the list is cosmetic
Pricing:
$9.99/month on the standard US price
$99.99/year on yearly billing
The Discord pages we read do not publish the yearly price
These prices come from third-party websites, not from Discord: CostBench, G2A News, eesel.ai etc.
Best for: Streamers, community regulars and anyone who wants to back a server with Boosts.

The $84 question
The gap between Basic and Nitro is $7.00 a month, using the monthly prices from third-party price listings.
Basic on monthly billing: $2.99 x 12 = $35.88 a year
Nitro on monthly billing: $9.99 x 12 = $119.88 a year
Difference: $84 a year
So the real question is not "Is Nitro worth $9.99?" It is "Do I use $84 worth of extras that Basic does not have?" For most casual users, the honest answer is no. If you do stream in HD or want to Boost a server you care about, the answer flips.
The gap shrinks a little if you pay yearly. Discord does not publish yearly prices on the pages we read. Third-party sites list $29.99 and $99.99, a gap of $70, but treat that as unconfirmed and check your own yearly prices in the app, since they can differ by country.
Choosing the Right Discord Plan
The three Discord plans are built for different levels of use, so the right choice depends mainly on whether you need bigger uploads, custom emoji, HD streaming, profile customization, or server Boosts.
Everyday chat and voice → Discord Free. Choose it if you mainly join servers, chat, use voice channels, and share files within the 20 MB upload limit.
Bigger uploads and custom emojis → Nitro Basic. Choose it if you want 50 MB uploads, custom emoji and stickers across servers, Super Reactions, and a few extra customization options without paying for full Nitro.
HD streaming and server support → Nitro. Choose it if you need 1 GB uploads, HD streaming, two Server Boosts, longer messages, or advanced profile customization.
Conclusion
Most people will land on Free or Nitro Basic, and one question usually settles it: has the 20 MB upload cap ever stopped you? If it has, Basic's 50 MB limit fixes that, and you also get access to emojis and stickers. Full Nitro makes sense once you know you will use something Basic leaves out, like HD streaming or Boosts for a server you care about, and buying it just in case can get expensive.
A rejected upload or a locked emoji points to Basic, and nothing at all means Free is doing its job. Prices differ by country, and the ones in this guide come from third-party sites, so check the Nitro tab in your settings before you pay.
